Simone Biles' husband Jonathan Owens caused a stir with comments back in December, when he suggested he was more of a 'catch' than the Olympic star.

Olympic icon Simone Biles hit out at fan backlash regarding her marriage to husband Jonathan Owens following his controversial comments last season. The gymnast and NFL player got married last year, but their relationship became a talking point after Owens suggested he was ‘the catch’ - and Biles fired an expletive-laden message to any fans with a problem.

Biles and Owens met on celebrity dating app Raya in 2020, when she was already a four-time Olympic gold medalist and considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all time. The couple crossed paths during the height of the coronavirus pandemic while Owens was a member of the Houston Texans and Biles had her chance to continue Olympic dominance delayed a year.

Back in December, Owens appeared on ‘The Pivot’ podcast when co-host Channing Crowder asked how he managed to court Biles. This led to a backlash, with fans interpreting Owens’ comments as thinking he was a bigger deal than the gymnast. And the comments resurfaced again as he was spotted watching his wife compete, and win, on Saturday in the Core Hydration Classic in Hartford, Connecticut.

“It’s really how she pulled me, man, that’s the question,” Owens responded. He then told the hosts he didn’t know of Biles or her achievements as he didn’t follow gymnastics, explaining: “I had some likes on my Instagram. I’m like, OK, so I see what’s up.

“So I still waited. ... And then I come back to my phone and she messaged me on the app. I didn’t know who she was at the time. But the first thing that I saw was that she just had a bunch of [Instagram] followers, so in my mind I’m like, ‘OK she got to be good.’”

When co-hostRyan Clark asked Owens if he was truly 'the catch’, the safety responded: “I always say the men are the catch.”

The backlash to her husband’s comments has upset Biles, who revealed last month that the public reaction brought her to tears. Now, the 27-year-old has had enough as she warned her fans with stern language.

On her Instagram Story, Biles wrote: “I’m going to quickly address this, the joke was never a joke! Y’all are blatantly being disrespectful to my relationship & my husband. So I’m gonna go ahead & say this one time. Respectfully, ---- off. & if you keep commenting or tweeting at me I’m just going to block you. simple as that. and no I don’t need to touch grass or whatever tf y’all suggest…

“@everyone else that supports us, we love y’all so much.”

Owens and Biles tied the knot in April 2023 at an intimate courthouse ceremony. The pair then celebrated with a second wedding in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico the following month, which was more of a party.

Earlier this offseason, Owens signed a two-year deal worth $4.75 million with the Chicago Bears. Meanwhile, Biles is preparing to potentially compete in the Paris Olympics this summer as she looks to add to her four gold medals.
