Also known as the only thing Ice Cube ever tried to direct. For a debut film I actually think it's quite good, but Cube must have realized how hard it was to wear all the hats of writing, directing, and acting and left it to the professionals.
Although filled with the cliches of a stripper paying for college film, it really comes together with a great ensemble cast.

Rustic Americana of a different variety, Ice Cube's voice is distinctive and has a patina that is uncommon and bold. There's a lot to love in his Directorial Debut, it's a shame that he never continued on down this track. Though there are certainly some very big misses and flat out messed up some shots there is equally full bodied characters, naturalistic extended dialogue sequences, challenging themes, and comedic talent in both the writing and direction.
The cat fight sequence and the depictions of sexual violence are notable. The choice to cast himself in an explicitly condemnable role to communicate his narrative is what I look for in artists. There's a lot to both criticize and love here. I'd recommend it if you have a Netflix account and want to watch something off the beaten path.
I'd love to see him try picking up the camera again.

Watching The Players Club, it certainly reminds me of a bit of Striptease with a bit of Showgirls.
Diana is a single mother with kids to feed who has aspirations in becoming a broadcast journalist and studies at college. In order to help pay her college fees, Diana turns to stripping. She works at a club owned by Hustler Bill (Bernie Mac) and tries to keep it a secret from everyone outside the club, especially her college professor. When Diana discovers her young and easily impressionable cousin is also working at the same strip joint, a bunch of people lead her onto a life of prostitution. Diana has to overcome the hurdles of this new life, whilst trying to balance…

Could have gone a lot further in depicting a world of women trying to work their way out from under systems dominated by people (male and female) determined to exploit them. Still not-infrequently a solid 90's imitation of vintage blaxplo.

a pivotal moment in black cinema.

Surprisingly hard-hitting and honest look at the strip club world. It does have one dimensional characters and an ending that, even as a obvious statement, goes way too far, but has the guts to present a no-holds-barred indictment of the flesh industry without getting (too) Lifetime.
