As the Field of 64 was announced yesterday, we're about to see the first wave of 2025 transfers enter the portal. I figured I'd start up this thread to keep track of incoming and outgoing transfers for the Diamond Deacs. It's not hard to find transfers that have made a huge impact in the past two seasons; Chase Burns, Sean Sullivan, Michael Massey, Cole Roland, Justin Johnson, Seaver King, Adam Tellier, Bennett Lee, the list goes on, so the names in this thread may end up being the x-factors and fan favorites of Team 111. I'll try to update this front page as new commits, contacts, and outgoing transfers are announced.
Incoming transfers:
- Cole Zaffiro - Gr. - RHP - Penn (Committed preseason 2023): Zaffiro has been the Friday night starter this year for the Quakers, with 12 starts, pitching to a 4.90 ERA with 92 strikeouts in 71.2 innings. He committed to the Deacs for the 2025 season before the 2024 season began. He's got a fastball in the low 90's, but it usually plays up due to a relatively high induced vertical break. in combination with a really sharp curveball and a deceptive changeup, he was able to lead the Ivy League in strikeouts. You can definitely see the upside here.
- Luke Schmolke - So - RHP - Georgia Tech (Transferred preseason 2023): Schmolke actually transferred to Wake before the 2024 season, but he did so after the transfer window closed, so he was ineligble to play. For this thread's sake, I'm going to treat him as a 2025 transfer. He was a weekend starter for GT as a freshman in 2023, but he had a bit of a rough season, with a 8.33 ERA in 16 appearances (12 starts). He has a really nice curveball with great depth, and a low to mid 90's fastball. I really don't know what to expect from him in 2025, but he has been working in the pitching lab with the coaching staff since he got on campus, and he's got legitimate potential, so he could end up being a great contributor.
- Matt Scannell - Gr. - OF/LHP - Princeton (Committed In December): Scannell is a 6 foot, 210 lb graduate transfer from Stone Oak, Texas, who hit .276 with eight homers, 12 doubles, and 21 RBI, and a .903 OPS for Princeton last season. He started ALL 43 games and allowed three runs in four appearances on the mound. He was second team All-Ivy in 2022 and 2023 and Ivy League All-Tournament this year. He’ll be playing in the Cape this summer for the Harwich Mariners, joining fellow Deacons Haiden Leffew and Blake Morningstar.
- Logan Lunceford - Jr. - RHP - Missouri (Committed June 11) : I like this get for the Deacs. This one is all about pitchability. He throws four pitches with regularity, a low-90’s fastball, a high RPM slider, a curveball, and a heavy-fade changeup that’s really his put-away pitch (>50% whiff rate). He can give you multiple different looks as offspeed/breaking options. He also throws strikes. 53/26 K/BB in 2024. He tossed six shutout innings with eight strikeouts against Florida this year. With two years in SEC play, ACC caliber baseball won’t be anything new to him. Clear to see the upside here.
- Griffin Green - Sr. - RHP - Virginia Tech (Committed June 11th): Green is a really enticing get for Wake. He missed 2024 and most of 2023 with an elbow injury, but he was absolutely fantastic for VT in 2022 to earn All-ACC Third team honors. He’s got a low-90’s fastball but his best stuff comes in the form of his breaking ball(s?). He has the propensity to make the bottom fall out of pitches. He doesn’t walk a ton of guys with a 2.35 K/BB rate, but his 7.6 K/9 isn’t going to make him a strikeout machine. With significant ACC starting experience, this pickup further bolsters the Deacons’ pitching staff.
- Matt Bedford - Gr. - RHP - Notre Dame (committed June 13th): Bedford is a really solid arm coming from the Friday night gig Notre Dame. He ended 2024 with a 4.65 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 62 innings. He’s got a fastball that can touch the upper nineties to go with two different high spin rate breaking balls and a nice changeup that sits around 84. He’s an experienced righty that should be yet another man to compete for a weekend rotation spot in 2025.
- Ethan Conrad - Jr. - OF/1B - Marist (Committed June 13th) : Conrad is a really exciting commitment out of Marist. He’s got elite speed and great bat-to-ball skills that earned him 18 doubles and 13 triples in 2024. He’s also got plus power. This is a potential star in the making, and if he does make noise for the Deacs in ‘25, he could easily be a day one draft pick. He’s played the outfield and first base, but I expect him at first for Wake with the outfield being pretty full and him being pretty solid at first.
- Jimmy Keenan - Jr. - C - St. John’s (Committed June 14th): Keenan was a standout for the Johnnies last year, .335 batting average, with 12 homers, 12 doubles, and a 1.018 OPS. He’s got some major pop that should play well in the Couch. He definitely has some strikeout issues but if he can get those down… whoof. He could be really dangerous. He’ll come into Wake for his junior season, and as of right now, I’d slot him right into the opening day catching role.
- Nate Brittain - So. - RHP - Campbell (Committed June 27th): Brittain was the Sunday starter as a true freshman last season for Campbell, putting up a 6.51 ERA in 37.1 IP. He’s got a three pitch mix with a really good fastball that’s gotten up to 99mph in game, sitting around 94-96. There is some MAJOR upside here. This is yet another potential weekend starter for the Deacs. I really, really like this one.
Outgoing transfers:
- RHP Will Andrews (entered in the preseason, Committed to Penn State on June 4)
- INF Pirmin Brechbuhl (June 3)
- RHP Andrew Koshy (Entered June 3, Committed to Maryland June 18th)
- LHP Levi Strahm (Entered June 3, committed to Yale June 17th.)
- INF Jeter Polledo (entered June 3, Committed to Bethune-Cookman June 18th.)
- LHP Hudson Lee (June 4)
- RHP Ben Shenosky (entered June 4, committed to Penn State June 8)
- LHP Will Gervese (June 7)
- RHP Brody Shawn (June 24)
- OF/INF Liam Willson (June 30)
Publicly in play with:
- Eric Rataczak - Gr. - 1B - Niagara
- Myles Patton - Jr. - LHP - Long Beach State
-Kade Lewis - So. - INF - Butler
Feel free to add any questions, comments, concerns, etc. and I along with probably Joseph, would be happy to answer/discuss.

Outside of the draft, UCF, Duke, FSU, and Texas are also in play here.

Griffin, are you hearing anything regarding the sign ability of our top recruits? I know I’ve heard Ryan Sloan being mocked as high as #15 overall, so I’d say there’s probably some worry there about getting him on campus

There's way more than some worry there. I personally think there's no chance Sloan puts on a Wake uniform. There's just so much money in a pick that high.
Otherwise, yeah, there's more that I have draft concerns about. Duncan Marsten, Chris Levonas, and JD Dix could all end up drafted early.
Dix I'm 50/50 on, Marsten and Levonas... it would be a pleasant surprise if they make it to campus.

Matt Conte is another incoming freshman I've heard floated around a bit, but I've also heard from multiple sources that he may not have much motivation to go to the draft now, since he'd be draft eligible as a sophom*ore anyway.

I read somewhere that all of their commitments were pretty strong (especially Levonas) but that may not matter if they go high enough. Could easily see both Levonas and Marsten (who I think is pretty underrated based on Big Boards I’ve seen) go somewhere in R2 or the competitive balance rounds. I haven’t been following Wake baseball as closely as I currently do for very long now, but it certainly feels like this is uncharted territory due to the success of last year. I can’t remember us ever having 4 prospects rated this high where we think there’s a solid chance that all get pried away by the MLB

Oh certainly. This class is really strong and it has the potential to be incredibly imactful depending on who makes it to campus.

I mean, it's 2024, almost everyone is at risk. Also worth reminding folks that we saw juniors and draft-eligible sophom*ores entering the transfer portal as a bargaining chip to get more money in the draft.

Looking back I think that Pre-Season ranking of number 1 was too high. We lost so many pitchers and players off that team. I don’t think many teams could replace that many pieces.

I think it’s funny looking back - one of the big reasons why we were rated so highly was because of the expectations of our rotation. In my opinion, the sure thing was Hartle and Burns was a complete unknown after being sent to BP with Tennessee. I also wasn’t really worried about the bullpen. I know injuries played a part there, but it’s funny how shockingly different a lot of areas of the team ended up from where expectations were, in both directions. Baseball is weird

Indeed. People tend to say “oh the pitching lab doesn’t work!” Or “fire Tom Walter!” But the reality is, this team has caught a lot of plain bad luck. Have some guys underperformed? Yes! But you’ve also had to use a lot of younger arms, and shocker! True freshmen usually don’t pitch to 3.00 ERA’s!
This bullpen had to eat a lot of innings, due to Massey injury trouble, Hartle short starts early in the year, and just not having a midweek guy that could give you five innings every Tuesday (and people wonder why Reed Mascolo was and is talked about so highly). When you put that much workload on a bullpen, especially one that’s had injury problems, it doesn’t usually go well.

We finished higher seeded this year than last years finalists and all other teams in last years CWS except UT and UVA, yet many see it as failure. With all we lost of course the preseason seed was nice but way overstated until We plugged in the pieces. Keep playing guys!

Totally forgot about Mascolo to be honest. Looking back it was kind of an embarrassment of riches. Last year we had Massey, Sullivan, Keener, and Mascolo (after already getting hit with a Teddy McGraw year-ender) to work the Sunday/Midweek games. This year, we had a rotating combo of three freshmen in Morningstar, Leffew, and Chenosky, along with an injured Massey. If I had to point to an area where the difference between 109 and 110 was the most significant, I’d say it would be either this or the loss of Bennett Lee

I’ve been wondering no chance Hartle or Massey stay? The draft stock had to take a decent hit.

Probably a 5% chance for each of them to return. In baseball the draft is so focused on age. The large majority of seniors sign for 25k or less. These two are both still 2nd-4th round picks which would mean between 500k-2 mil. I'm sure we could offer some NIL but that number would be lucky to get to six figures. Especially after Hartle turned down a possible first round selection out of high school, I'd be shocked if he doesn't take what he can get.

RTQ will be in position able to offer multiple 6-figure contracts to baseball student athletes.
That said, a 2nd-4th round pick's money is significant.

We point at the pitching, but defense was a big decline from last year. Dropped flyballs, bungled grounders, passed balls--sometimes all in the same inning (hyperbole, but still). Add that too way too many walks given up, and Wake just gave away runs.
In a hypercompetitive ACC baseball conference, the difference between a .500 record and being top tier is a narrow one.

Massey’s stock didn’t take much of a hit if any from what I’ve been told. Hartle’s clearly took a big hit. I don’t think there’s any chance Massey returns, but there’s probably a very low chance Hartle does.

Love to hear that. I think that particularly increases the possibility of a draft eligible soph like Winnay coming back, since he can still get a solid signing bonus next year. And of course this will be huge for recruiting the transfer portal.
